Games I Completed in 2016 #3: SaGa 3
As an adult it feels impossible for me to "miss something". I either choose to spend time with a game or not. Despite my love for the Final Fantasy Legends both 1 and 2, plus Adventure and the original Final Fantasy itself, I did not play FF4 or FF6 until later in life because wanting a game was not enough as a child. When the birthday or Xmas time rolled around, I made that list and my parents would pick up the first one they found on the list that was within the budget and well, available. You cannot buy what you cannot find and I sure do not remember seeing those SNES Final Fantasies on the shelves.
So went Final Fantasy Legend 3, or SaGa 3 or What the Hell is This Game? which feels like a good title or subtitle because wow. I warmed up to the game. Eventually. But it sure was weird coming off the two SaGa games where I felt I had to make the most of the mechanics available to me and then play this game where, well, I just ignored the mechanics. Meat and Parts! Shove them into your human bodies and change! Which, was SaGa-like in its complexity, depth and mystique, but also completely unnecessary. I just played as if it was some RPG where you had two fighters and two magic users. Although everyone was a fighter and a magic user. The original Fight and Heal this was not quite.
It is easy to see how this was the team that went on to make Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. With the hopping and the northward facing battle sprites in battle swinging their weapons, and pretty sweet music, although my confidence on who did what there is not strong enough to say it was the same folk. I hope someday someone invents Wikipedia.
Did I like it? As the game went on my initial shock of how different it was faded and I found some enjoyment. It was a video game. It was fine. I am more excited at the idea of playing the DS remake than ever replaying this.
