Games I beat in 2015 - #31: Maniac Mansion (Famicom)
Finally plopping down the cash for any copy of Maniac Mansion was highly satisfying. Although I'd love the original, which apparently is coming along with the remaster of Day of the Tentacle, finally getting to play the Famicom version of the game has been a... treat.
It's pretty buggy and full of strange choices. I've met Weird Ed in various parts of the house and walked right through him. Other times he has captured the kids. A dime (er, ten yen coin) keeps falling through the ceiling in Dr. Fred's room after you use the telescope. Ed has no coins in his piggy bank. Dr. Fred leaves no quarter (100 yen coin, that is) after playing the arcade game. If you move the character before they finish talking about how they fixed the broken wires, the sprite does not update. But the wires are fixed. I also managed to get Purple Tentacle to keep coming down the stairs and capturing me in front of the fuse box. Again, and again and again.
My favorite is that while it is impossible to take the radio off the floating pool chair while it is in the pool, you can open it and get the batteries in your character's inventory because item states are difficult.
I've managed to complete it in 20 minutes. A large chunk of that is waiting for the Meteor Police to show up. I've blown up the house many, many times as well, resulting in the adorable(?) image above.
It's broken and weird, but the Famicom version of Maniac Mansion is still fun.
