Back in high-school during my height of Magic: The Gathering playing, I read a lot of InQuest. The letter section was always a hoot, but there was one letter that has stuck with me for many years. In it, a concerned reader wondered what would happen to the Collectable Card Game genre when they ran out of words like “tap” to talk about turning a card sideways.
The response was short. It can’t happen. No definition of “tap” refers to turning a card sideways outside of Magic. (Okay, I think some other games used it, but that’s not the point.) because just like “tap” a word can just be given a new meaning in context. Not perfect for new players, as I have seen many a newcomer to Magic just quickly placing their fingers upon a card to “tap” it, but it didn’t take long for them to get the jist.
The text touch pad button stretching well over the space of the gray rectangle with dimples bothers me much more than it should, although I will admit even as someone who has played games for decades now, seeing just that rectangle gives me a brief pause as to what to press on the PS4 controller in that case.
Regardless, any name could have been given to it. Start and Select are only common because of time. Sony dropped them from the PS4 controller for Share, Option and “touch pad button” but some shorter name, maybe even printed on top of the “touch pad button” feels like it would have made everything feel more natural.
A curse that has now been replaced with Hearthstone. ↩
