Looking at this note really strikes me because there was a bug in iOS 7.0 SpriteKit with animating sprites with lots of transparency. I didn't realize this was the case until I got some screenshots from the artist asking why the flash animation didn't look quite like he had made it. It made little sense as my iOS 7.1 device did not have the issue. Not until I ran the simulator did I pinpoint this one. But in March I was still using my own artwork so I had encountered it without even realizing it.
