You and yours

Perhaps the only thing a professor in college said that had an immense impact on me was in a discussion of software piracy. “Most don’t think of themselves as bad people, so they reason they don’t do bad things.” Separating the person from their actions is extremely difficult, but realizing that a “good” person can do “bad” things - and feel free to replace bad with the adjective of your choice - completely changes the output. It is easy enough to group people, but to look at their reasons and their actions and find out more than just an excuse to yell feels a bit more satisfying.
