Shovel Knight is fun. Triple-u fun. Maybe even more than three. Lots of u’s. The stages are envy-worth as they show an intense attention paid to introducing a mechanic, using the mechanic and then twisting the mechanic. At the same time it feels challenging without too formulaic. Super challenging. I have died a heck of a lot of times during each of the five stages I have played so far.
The bosses not so much.
With the boss being the last part of each stage, their ease is on the one hand a bit appreciated, but as the game intelligently handles checkpoints they also disappoint as most can be dispatched without much thought. Even some of the optional bosses found throughout the bonus areas and towns don’t require much more than bouncing off their heads and flinging a few fireballs here and there.
