Because I listen to too much of the work of Merlin Mann and John Roderick, I bought a bell. A desk bell like in a hotel. It was one hundred yen. I put it on my home desk for a while and eventually realized I was not using it there.
So I put it in my work bag and started using it in class. At first it was surprising. Then it was funny. Then it was overplayed. And then it was funny again. Overusing it made if become even better when the students thought I would ring the bell but did not.
I am no artist but I like to think I try.
What has surprised me though is that several other teachers have since bought bells and began using them in their classes.
So it is true that to teach is to change lives.
