Thirty eight games this year, eighteen of them replays. That is twenty games I have never beaten before finally off of my backlog. I replayed more games this year than I did last year.

And yet.

It would be easy to think that I was lazier this year. I mean, I replayed more video games than I played games total in 2012. Yet I did more translation than I have ever done before, spent more time playing with my son - as he is getting to that age where he spends more of his day playing than sleeping - and I even released a video game.

I have not been getting more time or sleeping less. I have just finally been managing my time to do the things I want to do. I am far from good at this, but I think it is pretty clear from the list of games I played and the amount of work I know I did that I am focusing more on the stuff that matters to me.

Okay, personal development stuff out the window. The games!

There was a fair chunk of variety in my replays, but mostly Rockman and Final Fantasy. I am filing the FF replays under research[ref]Hint, hint, nudge, nudge.[/ref] but the Rockman games were to open the way to me finally playing 5, through 8, Rockman and Forte, X2 and X3. I would love to give X4 through X8 a play, but their prices are bonkers.

Other replays included Chrono Trigger and FF5, because I do those yearly. Dragon Quest squeaked in because of the iOS versions starting to come out. VVVVVV and Cave Story because I bought an iMac and installed Steam. Then Steam broke pretty solidly. A Link to the Past had nothing to do with its now-released sequel. God Slayer (Crystalis) and Seiken Densetsu happened because I was thinking about speed-running them for a while. That is a big key here.

This was a year of replaying, and I think that revitalized my love of gaming. A lot of this came from the X Games Done Quick speed running marathons and a(n un)healthy amount of time spent on Twitch. Also, hearing Merlin and Dan on Back to Work chatting about watching movies over and over again made me realize, hey, why am I not doing this with games?

Out of the backlog

One thing I think about is beating games that have “haunted” me for years. Simon’s Quest finally leaves my backlog and it was a good romp. Same with Super Mario Bros. USA which I realized that my brother had beaten[ref]My parents have the photograph.[/ref] but I had not.

Ys II and Trails in the Sky FC had been sitting around in my digital Falcom pile of guilt for a while now and I put them away for good. The Trails games are something I want to dig deeper into, but man that time investment. Finishing Ys II after the save file disaster I had a week before my son was born felt like a good way to get myself ready to dig into that series. Finally.

As I said earlier, I dug into the 5 through 8 games of Rockman, which I had missed out on for whatever reason. None of them will be ever said to be my favorites, but I am glad that I got them done. Shame about that series, though.

LIVE-A-LIVE I had always been scared to play because it seemed like such a daunting task. It sure was, but it was so worth it. The seven opening chapters plus the last two (Three? It is a confusing game in that sense.) were just a great mash of crazy and attempts to try something new in the RPG space. A must play for any fans of the genre.

Another World, The Secret of Monkey Island and Super Meat Boy fit nicely into the place of “Pesky PC games that I feel guilty about never playing” and were all more stressful than I would have imagined. Monkey Island made up for it by being hilarious. Super Meat Boy, I, well. Yeah. Will not be touching that one again. It was a gift, so no complaints. Another World sure does make you think about video games and how they can work. Although that last bit was a pain in the ass.

New games this year and my favorite of them

So if you look at the list there are not many games that came out this year (or in recent years) that hit my list of completions. Rising: Revengeance is the only one that I am seeing. I did pick up DQ7, SMT4, Monster Hunter 4, Pokémon X, Jojo’s All Star Battle and For the Sequel. So I guess Rising: Revengeance is my Game of the Year? Congratulations! It was pretty fun.

Not sure why I got Pokémon and MonHan 4 as I am not finding myself with the time for these kinds of games. I did put a good chunk of time into the monster hunting at its release. And X should last me a while if I just poke at it a bit each week. Nonetheless, I would have thought my lessons learned with Black and White and Tri G. Oh well.

Surprise “”hit”” of the year? All the Bravest. Yeah, it was a stupid money grab, but it was a fun stupid money grab that I spent no money on.

Wrapping it up

Good year! I have no idea what next year will bring, other than the fact that the new consoles means there should be a bit of a dry spell for a while. Not sure if I will be so replay heavy, but then again I want to finish up the Final Fantasy series replay and will be working on the Dragon Quest games as they hit iOS. What I am looking forward to is seeing how I improve my management of time. I realize there are still a few places I can improve, most of which is not stressing over the stressing over the time. But that is another story for another time.
